Rights of Children with Disability

The Convention of Rights of Children has emphasized the elimination of discrimination against children on the basis of sex, religious affiliation, and disability. Despite international efforts over the past decades, children with disability are still subject to direct and indirect discrimination: International statistics show that over 90% of children with disability are deprived of primary education, that the majority of children with disability suffer poverty, that they remain excluded and stigmatized.

This has led the UN to work on the convention of rights of people with disability. NCMM has supported the discussions of the convention and its ratification (April 13th, 2008). NCCM continues to coordinate efforts to eliminate discrimination against children with disability and to provide comprehensive services.

Estimated to reach around 8 million, individuals with disability face a lot of challenges in Egypt, including, but not limited to, social and environmental barriers, lack of services, and stigma. In 1996, a national strategy for disability was devised and adopted by NCCM and related ministries. This strategy is now under revision.

The modified child law has also included important rights for children with disability, notably the right to inclusive, non-discriminative education.
NCCM is currently working on coordinating efforts and leading the process of a suggested disability law that will cover all areas of rights of individuals with disability. Disability remains a priority area for NCCM.
