Rights of the Girl for Protection from all Forms of Violence and Discrimination

NCCM views the girl child as a vulnerable group whose rights are often infringed upon and discriminated against. Therefore, achieving greater gender equality has been one of NCCM’s top priorities.

NCCM’s focus on the rights of the girl child includes provision of the right nutrition, health care, education, protection from all forms of discrimination, violence and abuse, which includes female genital mutilation (FGM), child labor and early marriage.

Girl Education

Although education is a fundamental and basic human right for boys and girls alike, the education of girls in Egypt is often not considered a necessity. NCCM has therefore ranked the education of girls among its top priorities, as it believes that education is fundamental to the girl’s proper development, which naturally reflects on the whole of society.

The education of young girls prepares them for adulthood through the acquisition of knowledge and useful skills and prepares them for their roles as mothers, who carry the burden of raising future generations. High literacy rate among girls in the long term generates huge economic and social benefits. Illiteracy on the other hand hinders social and economic development in terms of waste of human capital and money spent on counter strategies.

A good education, therefore, optimally prepares girls for positive contributions to their society through their roles as mothers or working members of society. Investing in girl education is It also breaks the cycle of poverty and in the long-term guarantees the well-being and future prospects of coming generations.

Child Marriage

In many ways early marriages of girls generates negative effects on the individual and social levels.

Individually, early marriages deprive girls of their rights to develop and mature normally and deprive them of a proper education that will enable them in the future to raise their standard of living. It also endangers their lives, as early pregnancy is a serious health factor that burdens young girls with physical and psychological responsibilities that they are not ready for.

On the social level, early marriages deprive girls from a healthy psychological, physical and educational development. This in turn means the deprivation of society from an educated mother and an active member of society.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

Because FGM is performed on minors the majority of the time, it is perceived as a violation of child rights.

The practice violates the physical integrity of the person and the rights to be free from torture and a degrading physical treatment. Most of all it violates the right for life when the procedure results in death.
